Learning about the world on a micro-scale in the company of friendly people - Krzysztof Romaniuk, a second-year student at the Faculty of Chemistry, tells us about studying chemical analytics.

Why Lodz University of Technology?

I come from southern Podlasie (Lubelskie voivodeship), and I appreciate the beauty and power of nature. Lodz is a combination of modernity and nature - a perfect place for me. Well connected to many cities, many parks, murals and cultural events make it a friendly city for students from all over the country, those who like balance, as well as those who appreciate thrill. Additionally, the strong position of Lodz University of Technology, which is among the top technical universities in Poland, meant that I did not have any doubts about my choice.

Chemical analytics...

I used to like taking toys apart... They say that men never grow up and there must be something in it, because taking things apart and checking what they are made of, despite the fact that years have passed, it is still interesting for me. I enjoy knowing how something works and what it is. Apart from gaining knowledge, I wanted to respond to the needs of the market and help people, so I chose chemical analytics.

What does this field of study give you?

Thanks to the comprehensive approach to teaching, the future analyst, quality controller or other specialist who will graduate from this field of study will have the tools in the form of knowledge that will allow them to efficiently and economically design analyses, conduct them using advanced equipment, statistically analyze the results, draw conclusions and evaluate the factors that may have adversely affected the results. Sounds interesting, right? It's a great prospect for those who are creative and enjoy challenges.

What are the characteristics of teaching?

An analyst is first and foremost supposed to use knowledge to carry out analyses. To be able to do this, he needs solid practical classes in addition to lectures. This aspect is very well implemented at the TUL, even despite the pandemic. Professor, who is the supervisor of our field of study with her professional and kind team, meets the needs of students. This openness is demonstrated by the fact that we discuss the form of the exam, not just its date, which shows that being a student, despite a precisely specified curriculum, you have an influence on what you can study.

My opinion...

With initiative, enthusiasm and a great knowledge base, a chemical analytics student can achieve a lot. Statistics, rankings and ratings of students and graduates also confirm my opinion. You are not convinced? Check it yourself - everything will become clear and transparent, just like Lodz University of Technology website!

Due to the increase in the number of new coronavirus infections, the following restrictions will apply throughout Poland from March 20 to April 9.

They must suspend their activities:

  • hotels (exceptions include workers' hotels, as well as accommodation provided as part of business trips - the exact catalog of exceptions along with the required confirmation of a business trip will be included in the regulation);
  • shopping malls - with the exception of, among others: grocery stores, pharmacies and drugstores, press salons, bookstores, pet stores and construction shops. In shopping malls, they will still be able to operate, among others, hairdressing salons, optics, banking, laundry services;
  • theaters, museums, art galleries (it is possible, however, to organize rehearsals and exercises, as well as online events);
  • cinemas (the ban on screening films also applies to cultural centers and centers);
  • swimming pools (except for swimming pools in entities performing medical activity and for members of the national team);
  • saunas, solariums, Turkish baths, slimming salons, casinos;
  • ski slopes;
  • fitness clubs and gyms;
  • sports facilities (they can only operate for the needs of professional sports and without the participation of the public).

Important! For safety reasons, all students in Poland - including grades 1-3 - will learn remotely. We also recommend working online throughout the country - wherever possible.

On Easter, safety first

The difficult situation related to COVID-19 requires limiting our social activity - unfortunately also during Easter. If we want to go back to pre-pandemic times, we have to be responsible. Therefore, we should consider whether during the holidays we should limit our contacts only to the immediate family, and postpone any meetings to another, more safe time. Much depends on ourselves. Let's take care of ourselves and our family.

Remember to keep your distance, disinfect your hands, wear a mask and ventilate the rooms frequently. If you have a mobile phone, ask your relatives to install the STOP COVID ProtegoSafe application, which will notify you about possible contact with an infected person.

Nanotechnology is a real adventure, which allows you to look at the world from a different perspective. Dominik Bartosik, a second-year student, talks about his studies.

I chose Lodz University of Technology because...

I live near Lodz, and it was important for me not to leave my family home. I also wanted to combine my studies with work where I live. I got to know Lodz University of Technology long before I started my studies. I have an older brother who graduated with a degree in engineering from Lodz University of Technology. He told me about excellent lecturers and many interesting projects you could get involved in. I heard similar things from my older colleagues who chose to study at other faculties at TUL. I decided to give it a try and I think that it was the best decision I ever made. I am learning things that I am very interested in and I quickly felt comfortable at the university.

Nanotechnology ...

I got interested in nanotechnology when I learned about the possibility of obtaining two diplomas after completing my master's degree - from Lodz University of Technology and from University of Twente in the Netherlands. In my engineering studies, I learn about many aspects of chemistry, and I am particularly passionate about polymers - such as human DNA. These are huge chemical compounds, a single chain of which may consist of hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands of the same small elements. These compounds are also very natural - they occur in plants in the form of cellulose or in the shells of insects as chitin. Their use has great potential in the industry. Computer case, phone screen, keyboard, etc. - These are all products created using polymers. I will take part in a project of Lodz University of Technology, in which, together with a team of students, we will work on the implementation of chitosan (a derivative of chitin) into fibers, so that these fibers will gain antibacterial properties.

Studying nanotechnology

In the next semesters, we will study chemical and general engineering subjects such as mathematics or electrical engineering. Almost every semester of study is full of laboratory classes, which I like very much because it allows me to gain practical knowledge. Of course, learning doesn't end at classes. I encourage everyone to develop their passions in student research groups, and there is no shortage of them at TUL. I am the president of the Trotyl Student Research Group. We organize knowledge competitions on chemistry, we prepare presentations of interesting chemical experiments for young people, and we meet the current situation by working on a project on the synthesis of substances with antiviral properties.

Studying in the era of a pandemic...

I can reassure those who want to start their studies from October: studying in the time of pandemic is not as difficult as it may seem. Of course, even terabytes of films will not replace direct visits to the laboratory. However, most of the practical classes are in the second and third year of study - the first year is more lecture-based and theoretical. These forms of classes are work perfectly online.

International studies, beautiful interiors and passion in life. Milena Zavatska, a third-year student at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environmental Engineering from Ukraine, talks about her choice of architecture.

Poland is for me...

Poland is a picturesque and vibrant country with interesting traditions and many beautiful cities that you cannot pass by indifferently. You can see many similarities between my country and Poland, but even after many years of living here, some things in Lodz still surprise me. People here are kind and nice, I've never met anyone who would refuse to help me in my time of need.

I chose Lodz and TUL because...

I chose Lodz because a friend of mine already studied here and she highly recommended it. The possibility of going to another country for a semester under Erasmus+ and, above all, the chance to study abroad for free and to gain an international education convinced me to study at Lodz University of Technology

My first steps at TUL...

When I came to Poland it was a big challenge for me. I didn't have any friends and I was afraid of speaking a foreign language. If I didn't understand something, the teachers tried to explain it to me again. Now I know many people, I belong to an inspiring student organization ESN-EYE, and I fully develop my interests.

I chose architecture because...

Right from the beginning I was involved in designing buildings and their interiors. My passion first led me to technical high school and after graduating I couldn't imagine a life without design. The choice was obvious for me.

In the future, I would like to...

I always thought it was amazing to be part of the process in which the whole architectural world around us is created. Studying and the ESN-EYE organisation has opened up new possibilities for me, shown me the pleasure and satisfaction of being in contact with art and allowed me to continue to grow in what is important to me. My dream is to one day see the buildings of my project erected in the streets of Lodz.

Tuition-free international studies, trips abroad and great people I work with in ESN-EYE - Lodz University of Technology is second to none.

New technologies, magnetic rail and infrastructure of the future. Monika Jagodzińska, a third-year student and a committed representative of the Student Government at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, tells us what studying transport is like.

I have chosen the field of transport because...

My family has been involved in transport for as long as I can remember so I thought of graduating from university in this field. I have been fascinated by the world of automotive and railway industries and the ever-changing technical solutions used in these branches of transport. I chose Lodz University of Technology because it met my professional expectations and was highly ranked.

The field of transport enables you to learn...

Transport is a field that includes technical knowledge that every engineer should have such as: mechanics, mechanics of materials and manufacturing techniques, it is also rich in subjects that focus on road and rail transport such as: traffic engineering, transport infrastructure, logistics and railway traffic control. Depending on your interests, you can then choose from a range of specialisations.

What is studying transport like?

Transport is used in virtually every branch of industry. Lodz University of Technology knows it very well and that is why it educates professionals who move with the times. Such engineers are familiar not only with current propulsion systems and infrastructure areas, but also with those that are yet to appear on the market, such as magnetic railways. The basis of such an education is a combination of theory and practice. During our infrastructure classes we were able to modernise a real housing estate in Tychy, taking into account everything from kerb height to curve widenings and bus bays to designing a roundabout instead of an intersection to increase capacity. All the project, laboratory, exercise and lecture classes develop our capabilities and allow us to gain specific skills which will be useful in our future work.

And after classes...

I devote a lot of time to voluntary work at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. My greatest achievements include being a member of the Faculty Scholarship Committee as well as the Faculty Self-Government Council. The Faculty Scholarship Committee helps to compile documents in order to help the neediest students receive not only social scholarships, but also allowances in case of accidents, childbirth or death of a loved one. In turn, the Faculty Self-Government Council is responsible for a whole range of student events and activities, such as integration events, concerts to celebrate student festival (Juwenalia), Christmas campaigns and competitions. Working in these organisations has not only helped me gain skills that I can include proudly in my CV, but it has also allowed me to meet many wonderful people.

What I value most about TUL...

Many opportunities for development. It is worth remembering that studies offer great opportunities and apart from studying at university there are many organizations and scientific clubs where you can not only pursue your passions but also travel and see the world. Thanks to my studies at TUL, I have met many interesting people and taken part in fascinating projects. Choose the field with a great future and join us!

In Poland, we have recently recorded an increase in COVID-19 infections. We have exceeded the barrier of 10,000 new cases daily.

The safety rules are extended until March 14th.

The use of visors and scarves is prohibited from February 27 - the best protection is the mask

The most important decisions regarding a pandemic are made together with public health specialists, professors, virologists and epidemiologists. The Medical Council has prepared recommendations on how to cover the mouth and nose best to protect us against infection.

According to the recommendations, it is forbidden to wear visors, scarves, headscarves, etc. They do not meet the safety criteria and do not protect us against infection as effectively as masks.

Quarantine on arrival from the Czech Republic and Slovakia from February 27 - exception for vaccinated and negative test persons

The epidemic situation in our neighborhood is worrying, therefore all people returning from the Czech Republic and Slovakia will be sent to quarantine. This also applies to people who cross the border by car. The exceptions are those vaccinated with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine or those who tested negative. The test must be performed before the limit is exceeded. It is valid for 48 hours from the moment of receiving the result.

Rules in force until March 14

  • Covering the mouth and nose with a mask only - from February 27

From March 1 to March 14:

  • Hotels - available to everyone while maintaining the sanitary regime (50% of available rooms, meals only served in rooms, at guests' request. Hotel restaurants - closed).
  • Cinemas, theaters, operas and concert halls reopened - a maximum of 50% of the seats may be occupied during cultural events. Masks are obligatory. Prohibition of consumption.
  • Open pools. The water parks will still be closed.
  • Open slopes.
  • Open outdoor fields, courts, etc. - amateur outdoor sport resumed.
  • Gyms still closed.
  • Restaurants - as before - will be able to provide take-out and delivery meals.

The exception is the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, where due to the difficult epidemic situation, safety rules are tightened from February 27. Students of grades 1-3 will return to distance learning, the following will be closed:

  • hotels,
  • shopping malls - with the exception of grocery stores, pharmacies and drugstores
  • cinemas, theaters, museums, art galleries
  • swimming pools and tennis courts.

Stay safe - follow the DDMA + A principle

Effective fight against the coronavirus is primarily compliance with the basic safety rules - DDMA + A, that is:

  • Distance
  • Disinfection
  • Mask
  • application STOP COVID - ProteGO Safe
  • Airing

Maintaining social distance, min. 1.5 m, frequent hand washing and disinfection as well as covering the mouth and nose are the basic activities that reduce the risk of coronavirus infection. It is also worth ventilating the rooms in which we stay, especially in workplaces or educational institutions.

The STOP COVID application - ProteGO Safe also supports the fight against the threat. It is completely safe, free and voluntary. The more people use it, the faster and more effectively we will reduce the pace and extent of the spread of the coronavirus.

Dear secondary school graduates and future students of Lodz University of Technology! My name is Adrian Wulkiewicz. I am a third-year engineering student at the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering. Today I will tell you about the studies that fulfill my dreams.

Why these studies?

               For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to do something more in life than learn dry facts. I have also always been drawn towards math and chemistry. My love for science and my desire to protect the environment make a perfect combination with the opportunities for development that TUL offers. I am learning about modern environmental protection technologies in one of the most modern laboratories in Europe - in LabFactor at TUL I have the opportunity to conduct research at the highest level.

What did I discover at university?

               After the first year of studies I knew that if I put my mind to my studies, there will be a lot of opportunities for development. In addition to knowledge and a diploma, studying environmental engineering also gives you the opportunity to obtain building qualifications in a number of specializations: construction and building, installation in the field of renewable energy sources, networks and installations as well as heating, ventilation, gas, water and sewage equipment. With these qualifications, you can work in designing modern buildings. We can also design modern sanitary installations, air conditioning, gas pipelines and much more. And if someone does not like working behind the desk, they can work in the field, for example, when taking samples for analysis.

What does college look like?

                The first semesters prepare the students to understand and solve the problems they will face in subsequent semesters. During the following years, the students acquire the knowledge that every engineer should have. They learn how to design, and use programs necessary for student work, or how to solve engineering problems. They can also take advantage of many opportunities to develop their own interests, thanks to numerous student research groups that operate at the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering. I belong to the "Oktan" Student Research Group, where we create amazing projects, such as Chemcar, which is a vehicle powered by a chemical reaction that is not a combustion reaction.

Studies and sport

The university supports not only academic but also sport passions. I have been training water polo in the Lodz club "Lodz Sports Water Polo Association" since September 2009. I know from my own experience that it is possible to combine studying with passion for sports and to train in professional clubs at sports facilities belonging to Lodz University of Technology, such as the Sports Bay swimming pool. I prepared there, among others, for the 2019 Academic European Championships in Koper, where I won the title of European Champion.

Why is it worth it?

               First of all, studies are the best period in everyone's life. It is when you meet the greatest number of people, it is when you will undertake your first serious projects, often on an international scale, and make your dreams of international exchanges come true. Lodz University of Technology offers great opportunities for development. The classes are conducted by experts in their fields who offer a helping hand at every step. I strongly encourage you to study at the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering. Perhaps we will meet soon at the university or we can work together on an interesting project in the student research group Oktan.

See you soon!

Studying Mechanical Engineering is one great adventure in which you will get to know the engineering world millimetre by millimetre. You will gain knowledge in absolutely every sphere of the world of mechanics.

Why did you decide to study Mechanical Engineering at Lodz University of Technology?

I've wanted to be an engineer ever since I can remember. In high school, I chose a technical profile – technician of machines and industrial devices, so the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was just perfect for me. I was also attracted by the possibility of comprehensive development – I wanted to join scientific clubs that carry out a lot of research and allow me to pursue my own interests. And why Lodz University of Technology? The answer is simple. It is a university characterised by high standards among other universities of technology, recognized in the European arena for its international projects, in which both staff and students successfully participate.

What is it like to study Mechanical Engineering?

Studying at this field is a great adventure in which you will get to know the engineering world millimetre by millimetre. You will acquire knowledge in every sphere of mechanics, without exception. You will participate in laboratory activities where you can put your knowledge into practice. You will learn how to apply mathematical formulas and concepts when creating your own assemblies of parts or entire machines. These studies will certainly not let you get bored at any stage of your engineering career.

What kind of job can I do after graduating from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering?

After graduating from Mechanical Engineering, you can find a job in nearly any field of industry, from design and maintenance positions to conducting research or managing scientific projects in the laboratory. For me, studying Mechanical Engineering is like discovering myself. With every passing year, I find other areas of mechanics that fascinate me and only at the end of this path will I decide where I will work.

What do you value most about studying at TUL?

The greatest advantage of studying at Lodz University of Technology is the possibility of development in numerous scientific clubs and the opportunity to meet people with whom you can share your passion. The modern didactic base is also remarkable - Lodz University of Technology has a lot of specialist equipment and many research stations, which you can use in your work or projects. The library at Lodz University of Technology is also a great asset, as it has thousands of publications that you won't find online or which would be very expensive to access. For me, studying is about creating my own personality, and Lodz University of Technology provides great conditions for that.
