In November, ICC hosted the first official meeting of the ACE project - Alliance for Community Engagement in European Higher Education.

The overall goal of the project is to broaden the scope of community engagement by higher education institutions (HEIs). The project also seeks to enhance the role of universities in supporting societies across Europe and to strengthen the capacity of their staff to effectively address societal challenges. The consortium's activities will be grounded in an innovative cooperation model known as the "quadruple helix," which incorporates collaboration between academia, industry, public administration, and society, including institutions representing these sectors, such as NGOs.

The initiative unites a range of institutions with varied profiles from six countries - Lodz University of Technology (coordinator), ACEEU GmbH (Germany), University of Belgrade (Serbia), Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (Ireland), University of Tartu (Estonia), European e-Learning Institute (Denmark).

During the meeting in Lodz, key project elements were discussed, individual partners' responsibilities were outlined, and the action plan for the coming months was established. Particular focus was given to Work Package 2, which involves creating a future thinking European University Community Engagement Guide offering practical information and strategies to increase societal contribution of European HEIs.

The ACE project is implemented under Erasmus+ Action 2 Cooperation Partnerships. The project budget is 400,000 EUR.

On 29 October, the results of the European Ranking of Engineering Programs EngiRank were published. Lodz University of Technology (TUL) was ranked 96th in Europe and 6th in Poland (ex aequo with Poznan University of Technology).

The EngiRank 2024 – the Institutional Ranking included 226 universities from the 27 countries of the European Union as well as Switzerland and Norway and, as in last year's edition, the Technical University of Denmark from Denmark, Delft University of Technology from the Netherlands and KU Leuven from Belgium once again took the top spots in the ranking.

In addition to the overall ranking, “by subject” rankings were also published, taking into account the field of engineering and technology. Lodz University of Technology was ranked in all seven categories. Nationally, Lodz University of Technology was on the podium in two of these categories, taking third place in Poland in: Chemical Engineering (61st in Europe) and Mechanical Engineering (82nd in Europe). In the other categories, TUL ranked 5th in: Electrical, Electronic & Information Engineering (88th in Europe) and Materials Engineering (89th in Europe), 7th in Poland in Medical Engineering (93rd in Europe) and 8th in Poland in: Civil Engineering (94th in Europe) and Environmental Engineering (132nd in Europe).

The methodology developed for EngiRank, in addition to indicators like publications and citations also considers such factors as: collaboration with industry, joint research with business, patents, contributions to SDGs goals, participation in EU programmes (Horizon and Erasmus + European Universities) and engineering accreditations (ENAEE, ABET). The data for the ranking comes  from: Elsevier’s Scopus database, the European Patent Office PATSTAT, Horizon Europe, and organizations accrediting engineering studies (ABET, ENAEE).

The European Ranking of Engineering Programs - EngiRank 2024 was prepared by the  “Perspektywy” Educational Foundation in cooperation with the Foundation for the Development of the Education System (FRSE) and Elsevier.

We are pleased to inform you that from September 9th to 13th, 2024, Lodz University of Technology hosted a delegation from the University of Aveiro. Both institutions, as members of ECIU, strive to strengthen cooperation and exchange experiences.

We are pleased to announce the visit of delegates from the University of Aveiro to Lodz University of Technology (TUL) from September 9th to 13th, 2024. Both universities are proud members of the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU), which comprises 14 member institutions. This visit was part of the University of Aveiro’s initiative to send its international officers to all member universities, fostering collaboration and exchange.
The delegation included notable representatives such as
•    Rita Oliveira, PhD student in Marketing and Strategy from International Office – Marketing and Communication, University of Aveiro,
•    Mariana Afonso Pires de Rosa, MA in Multimedia Communication from Division of New Communication Technologies, University of Aveiro.
During their visit, the delegates from the University of Aveiro were warmly welcomed and given a comprehensive tour of TUL, including key facilities such as the Sport’s Bay and various campuses. They attended an informative presentation about TUL, followed by engaging discussions on potential collaborative projects. The delegation also had productive meetings with several departments, including the ECIU office and the Student Mobility Section, to explore opportunities for student exchanges and other initiatives. Additionally, the guests met with Dr. Ewa Brochocka, Director of the Sport’s Centre at TUL, to exchange best practices. Newly enrolled foreign students have arrived at the university to begin their first- and second- studies in Polish and English, both at the faculties and at the International Faculty of Engineering of Lodz University of Technology.

The strategy of International Cooperation Centre has once again ensured an increase in the internationalization of the university in the context of foreign students enrollment, and has made it possible to attract 689 foreign applicants from 63 countries, thus diversifying the nationalities of the students admitted to the university.

Out of those who met the admission criteria, a record number of almost 200 young people submitted their documents and actually sat in the university's lecture halls and began their education on October 1. We admitted almost 70% more foreign students than in the previous year. If it weren't for the complex visa situation, which affected foreign recruitment at all domestic universities, we would have had more foreign students at TUL as more than 80 additional foreign candidates, accepted for studies in the admission process, declared that they dream of beginning their studies at our university.

The new foreign students at TUL represent countries in Asia (including South Korea, India and Kazakhstan), Africa (including Morocco, Egypt and Zimbabwe) and even South America (Colombia and Brazil). There is also growing interest in studying at Lodz University of Technology among candidates with citizenship of European countries. This year students from Italy, Sweden, Slovakia or Georgia were also accepted.

On September 27, they were all invited to the International Cooperation Centre for an onboarding meeting and integration. The newly admitted students received a large portion of useful information that will help them adapt to their new cultural context and academic life. They also played games, listed to music, took part in fun activities and were able to meet in person with their assigned mentors - upper-year foreign students who will support them during their first year of study.

Now it's all in their hands! We wish the all the best and fun time of studying at Lodz University of Technology.

On September 25-27th, the partners of the Erasmus+ #edu4sdgs project gathered in Barcelona to review the activities completed so far, plan the work for the upcoming months, and take part in two training sessions.

On the first day, they discussed the micro-credentials to be awarded through the 10 educational pathways developed as part of the project. The group also reviewed preliminary survey results, outlined next steps for creating an online learning space (the SDGs University Knowledge Hub), and addressed plans for organizing a summer school in Riga. Additionally, participants were introduced to an initial concept for a city game, aimed at developing emotional intelligence in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In the following days, two training sessions were held for the project team. The first one focused on emotional intelligence, with the goal of enhancing participants' self-awareness, empathy, and social skills, while also exploring the link between emotional intelligence and the SDGs. The second session emphasized the collaboration between universities and NGOs to advance the SDGs. Participants were presented with examples of best practices in this area and discussed effective strategies to promote cooperation between higher education institutions and the third sector.

The meeting was attended by representatives of all #edu4sdgs partners – Lodz University of Technology (coordinator), Riga Technical University (Latvia), Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (Germany), Team Coaching (Poland), Welfare and Development Association (Spain) i Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain).

The #edu4sdgs project is implemented under Erasmus+ Action 2 Cooperation Partnerships.
